Fifteen
Quadruple Threat
Itâs been a week since the big clash at The Rear End, and Guns and Seraphina have entered a truce on behalf of the Blossoms and the Dudes. Itâs definitely thanks to more levelheaded members of our houses, like Doc, who miraculously came around, and Lucian, whoâs half outside, half inside.
The Iotas have received a lot of scathing comments from the student body via the newspaper, and both Seraphina and Guns have responded. The Blossoms and the Dudes collectively have refused being interviewed, though, because no one knows which way that paper would twist our stories.
âYou know what I donât like about this?â Seraphina asks, her mouth full of celery sticks dipped in peanut butter. She crunches while she waits for the rest of us to say stuff like, âNo idea,â and âWhatâs that, honey?â (Ninni), and âWho cares?â Betsy deserves the glare she gets for that one. Somehow, sheâs still here, keeping up with our rulebook, and Iâve seen no more of her smug smiles. The last part could be because, since The Rear End, the Blossoms and the Dudes havenât been at each otherâs throats. Weâre back to normal, secretly preparing our next prank.
âTell us what you donât like about it.â Ninni tries to steal one of Seraphinaâs celery sticks. She gets a smack for that and rubs her hand in her lap.
âIt almost feels like last year. Weâre collaborating with the Dudes again. This is so not great.â
âBut itâs for the common good,â I say. âWe win. They win.â
âExactly!â Tildaâs stare widens, clearly getting where Seraphina is going with this. âWe want to win. They need to lose. How do we make them lose and we still win?â
Seraphina nods deeply, slowly, moving her gaze between us.
âThat wouldâve been easy,â Betsy says, âbut you guys wanted none of that. If youâd kept your mouths shut and not commented on the article, people would have seen the Dudes for what they really are, and weâd have come out on top.â
âReally? Is it coming out on top to have all of Deepsilver looking at us like weâre the poor girls who canât stand up for ourselves? No one mentioned our counter pranks in that article. We seemed like total victims.â
Betsy wiggles to get comfortable on the chair as she stirs her muesli mix. âTheyâre over the top is what they are. They go to extremes we donât.â
âSo spreading fake semen everywhere wasnât going to extremes?â I ask.
âIt was nothing like their office thing.â Betsy whips out her glower to prove her point. She looks almost hostile like that, with her head down and her eyes scouring first me, then Seraphina.
âOkay. Well, youâll be happy to learn that our next prank involves redecorating, then.â Seraphina sniffs, her mood brightening at the thought. âSaki and Iâve been brainstorming, andââ
âAww, without us?â Tilda plops her lip out in a pout.
âOnly because you werenât here. We were watching a show on TV, and it just happened, mâkay? If you donât like what weâve got, weâll come up with something else.
